Thousands of Pensioners Face Delays in Winter Fuel Payments Due to Backlog

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has deployed 500 additional staff, doubling its weekly processing capacity to around 9,000 claims, but delays persist.
Only about 45% of Pension Credit applications processed since July have been approved, leaving many pensioners ineligible for the Winter Fuel Payment under new means-tested rules.
The deadline to apply for Pension Credit to qualify for this year’s Winter Fuel Payment is December 21, with payments ranging from £200 to £300 for eligible applicants.
Advocacy groups and experts urge pensioners to check their eligibility and apply, as Pension Credit also unlocks additional benefits such as housing support, free TV licenses, and heating bill assistance.
