Thousands of Lightning Strikes Hit Bay Area Overnight

Fire crews are inspecting roughly 173 potential ignitions as the rare autumn system shifts south.

  • The National Weather Service reported over 3,000 lightning strikes in 12 hours and more than 5,000 in 24 hours as storms swept the region.
  • A lightning strike ignited the attic of a Brentwood home after hitting a roof weathervane; firefighters extinguished the blaze and reported no injuries.
  • Cal Fire said crews are checking about 173 spots for possible wildfires in San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties, with no large fires confirmed.
  • The storms produced brief heavy rain, gusts up to about 30 mph and small hail, with rainfall ranging from a trace in much of the East Bay to roughly 0.75 inch in parts of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
  • Lightning was concentrated in Solano County and eastern Alameda and Contra Costa counties, and one bolt appeared to hit near the Bay Bridge as activity tapered by late morning.
