Overview

  • John Mayer closed the event by leading the crowd in the Grateful Dead classic “Ripple,” following tributes onstage and by video from friends and peers.
  • Speakers included Mickey Hart, Joan Baez, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, with opening prayers by Buddhist monks.
  • Weir’s wife Natascha and daughters Monet and Chloe addressed mourners, with Monet noting his wish for the music and community to outlast him.
  • Organizers staged a short procession along Market Street to Civic Center Plaza, where volunteers handed out long-stemmed red roses and the memorial was livestreamed.
  • Weir died Jan. 10 at 78 from underlying lung issues after beating cancer, and Luminate reported a 53% jump in Grateful Dead on-demand streams to 9.5 million between Jan. 9 and Jan. 13.
