Thousands Gather in Big Bear for Jackie the Eagle’s Memorial

The large turnout underscored Jackie’s role as a unifying conservation symbol while veterinary necropsy and toxicology results into her August death remain pending.

Overview

  • The “Wings Over Big Bear” memorial on the weekend of Oct. 2–3 drew thousands to Bear Mountain Resort and Fawnskin to honor Jackie and to grieve with livestream fans and local residents.
  • Jackie died in August after weeks of treatment at the Ojai Raptor Center where vets found severe anemia, gave a blood transfusion and ran advanced tests that so far have not identified a definitive cause.
  • A necropsy and toxicology follow-up are still pending, leaving the medical cause of Jackie’s sudden illness unresolved for researchers and the public.
  • While Jackie was in care in early August a banded female called KD1, nicknamed Kaydee, appeared on the nest cameras and has been seen associating with Jackie’s mate Shadow, suggesting a new pairing at the nest.
  • Friends of Big Bear Valley’s nonstop livestream since 2015 made Jackie a global figure who raised seven fledged eaglets and organizers used the memorial to showcase art, wildlife education and conservation work that could sustain local engagement and tourism.
