Third Suspect Charged in CTA Bus Beating of 62-Year-Old

Police say CTA bus cameras helped identify the youths now facing aggravated battery charges.

Overview

  • Chicago police identified the third suspect as Lyndale Roberts Jr., 18, who was arrested and charged with felony aggravated battery counts, along with trespass, obstruction of identification, and possession of burglary tools offenses.
  • Two 15-year-olds were previously charged with aggravated battery to a transit passenger and to a person over 60, and police say the girl also faces a separate attempted vehicle theft charge from Dec. 21.
  • The attack happened around 5:40 to 6 p.m. on Dec. 16 on a northbound CTA bus in the 700 block of South Cicero Avenue as it approached the Eisenhower Expressway.
  • The victim, Larry Gilkey, suffered severe brain injuries, spent days in a medically induced coma, remains hospitalized, and is expected to need rehabilitation, according to his family.
  • Investigators used CTA onboard surveillance video to identify the suspects, and relatives describe the incident as a bait-and-switch after one teen asked Gilkey for bus fare.
