Third Man in His 50s Found Dead Outdoors in Nova Scotia in Five Weeks

The death of a 56-year-old man in a Dartmouth tent encampment has renewed calls for affordable housing and mental health resources.

Halifax Regional Police discovered a 56-year-old man deceased in a tent at the Geary Street encampment in Dartmouth on Thursday afternoon.
This is the third death of a man in his 50s living outdoors in Nova Scotia since late November, with previous deaths reported in Windsor and Kentville.
Advocates emphasize the urgent need for affordable housing and increased mental health and addiction support services in the region.
The Geary Street site is one of five designated outdoor sheltering locations approved by Halifax Regional Council, with 62 tents and three trailers currently in use across the sites.
As of mid-December, over 1,200 people in Halifax were identified as needing housing, while more than 7,000 remain on the waitlist for affordable public housing across the province.
