Overview
- North Wales Police identified Andrew David Kenneth Young, 82, from Holyhead, as the third British national among the 16 people killed in last week’s Glória funicular derailment.
- The other British victims were previously named as Kayleigh Gillian Smith, 36, and William Nelson, 44, with authorities confirming fatalities also included five Portuguese, two Canadians, two South Koreans, one American, one French, one Swiss and one Ukrainian.
- A preliminary report said the cabins traveled only about six meters before the system “suddenly lost the balancing force” of the connecting cable, and wreckage examinations indicated the cable snapped at its attachment point as the brakeman’s efforts failed to slow the descent.
- Investigators reported the failure site could not be seen during a routine visual check, and noted the cable had an expected operational life of 600 days and had been in service for 337 days.
- Multiple probes are underway by technical investigators, police and prosecutors, plus the operator Carris’s internal inquiry, with an initial fuller report expected within roughly 45 days as Lisbon’s mayor orders an external review of maintenance contracts.
