Thieves Cut Through Florida Mall Roof to Steal Hundreds of Sneakers

Detectives are seeking tips after the Jensen Beach break-in they believe was carried out by an organized crew.

Overview

  • The overnight burglary occurred between midnight and 8 a.m. Tuesday at a Champs Sporting Goods inside Treasure Coast Mall in Jensen Beach.
  • Investigators say the crew cut a hole through the concrete roof, dropped into a back storage area, then bagged merchandise and tossed it off the roof to a waiting vehicle.
  • Authorities estimate 400 to 500 pairs of Nike and New Balance sneakers were taken, valued at roughly $40,000 to $50,000, with roof repairs expected to cost about $10,000.
  • Sheriff John Budensiek likened the method to a movie-style heist and said the suspects likely used electric cutting tools and worked for hours without detection.
  • No suspects have been publicly identified or arrested, and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office urges tips at 772-220-7060 or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273-TIPS.
