Therme Manchester Construction Set to Begin This Month After Sir Robert McAlpine Appointment

Construction is now scheduled to start this month with completion targeted for late 2028.

  • Developers marked the official start of work with a ‘Beyond Groundbreaking’ event, saying the main construction phase will commence at the end of September.
  • Sir Robert McAlpine has been appointed construction manager, following a pre-construction services agreement.
  • Therme Horizon, the Therme GroupCVC joint venture valued at over €1 billion, is funding the project, which the company recently costed at about £415 million, up from £175 million in 2019.
  • The 28-acre resort is billed as Europe’s largest single-roof thermal pool complex, featuring 25-plus water slides, the UK’s largest sauna area, a family wave pool, botanical gardens and immersive art.
  • Therme says the build will create around 2,500 construction jobs and 650 operational roles, with sustainability measures including a 200m borehole and an on-site energy centre using air-source heat pumps and thermal storage.
