• Mayor Olivia Chow proclaimed July 26–27 as “The Weeknd Weekend” and presented Abel Tesfaye with the Key to the City on July 26.
• The Weeknd kicks off his four-show homecoming series tonight at Rogers Centre and will return for concerts on July 28 and August 7–8.
• As part of the honors, Tesfaye pledged to fund a Scarborough basketball court, build a mobile recording studio for the Boys & Girls Club and develop arts and sensory facilities at Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute.
• His past philanthropy includes a $500,000 donation to the Scarborough Health Network during the pandemic and support for the University of Toronto’s Ethiopian Studies program.
• Born and raised in southwest Scarborough, Tesfaye began by sharing music anonymously online and has since earned Grammys, Billboard Music Awards, Junos and American Music Awards.
