The Weeknd Donates $350,000 to WFP to Boost Jamaica Hurricane Relief

The gift backs the UN food agency’s scale-up following a Category 5 storm that affected nearly six million people across the Caribbean.

Overview

  • The donation comes via the XO Humanitarian Fund, which The Weeknd launched in 2022 and has contributed and pledged more than $6.5 million to humanitarian responses.
  • WFP says it aims to scale operations to reach up to 200,000 Jamaicans recovering from Hurricane Melissa.
  • Working alongside the Jamaican government, WFP has delivered food kits to more than 9,000 people in Jamaica and assisted about 254,000 people across Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba.
  • The Weeknd is a WFP Goodwill Ambassador, and World Food Program USA president Barron Segar publicly thanked him for supporting urgent relief efforts.
  • Artist-led relief efforts are continuing, with a Jamaica Strong benefit concert announced for Dec. 12 at UBS Arena led by Sean Paul, Shaggy and Kes.
