‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ to Stream on Max Starting February 28

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, directed by Kenji Kamiyama, will debut on Max on February 28 at 8:00 PM ET, with an HBO airing on March 1.
This animated film is set 183 years before the original trilogy and focuses on King Helm Hammerhand and his daughter Héra defending Rohan’s stronghold, the Hornburg, from a vengeful Dunlending lord named Wulf.
The voice cast features Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand, Gaia Wise as Héra, Luke Pasqualino as Wulf, and Miranda Otto reprising her role as Éowyn, serving as the story’s narrator.
Despite its connection to the beloved franchise, the film received a lukewarm critical reception, earning a 48% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and underperformed at the box office, grossing just over $20 million worldwide.
Produced by Philippa Boyens, with executive producers including Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, the film represents Warner Bros.’ continued exploration of Tolkien’s universe, though future anime projects remain uncertain.
