New 'No Return' Mode in Remastered Version Sparks Controversy Over Game's Central Theme

The Last of Us Part II Remastered is set to release on PS5 on January 19, 2024, following a leak and subsequent confirmation by Sony.
The remastered version will feature improved loading times, 4K graphics, full integration with the PS5’s new DualSense wireless controller, and a new roguelike survival mode called 'No Return'.
Owners of the original game will be able to upgrade to the remaster for $10, and save data from the PS4 version can be transferred.
The new 'No Return' mode will allow players to choose their path through a series of randomized encounters, playing as different unlockable characters, some never-before playable in the franchise.
Despite the new mode's emphasis on replayability and violence, critics argue it undercuts the game’s main theme of breaking the cycle of violence.
