'The Color Purple' Musical Film Set for Christmas Day Release

Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, and Taraji P. Henson Star in the Highly Anticipated Adaptation Produced by Oprah Winfrey

The new adaptation of 'The Color Purple' is set to release on December 25, 2023. The film is a musical adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker and the 1985 film.
Fantasia Barrino stars as Celie, the lead role, with Danielle Brooks as Sofia, Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, and Colman Domingo as Mister. The film is directed by Blitz Bazawule.
Oprah Winfrey, who played Sofia in the 1985 film, is a producer for the new adaptation. She revealed that there was pressure to cast big-name stars like Beyoncé or Rihanna, but she and the team wanted to focus on actors who could best embody the characters.
Danielle Brooks, who played Sofia in the 2015 Broadway revival of 'The Color Purple', received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in the film. Both Brooks and Barrino have previously played their roles on Broadway.
The film is already generating Oscar buzz and is seen as a significant cultural manifesto for the Black community.
