The Boring Company Halts Las Vegas Airport Tunnel Work After Reported Crushing Injury

Nevada regulators have opened an investigation, reflecting mounting scrutiny of the company’s tunneling program.

Overview

  • Clark County Fire Department said it received a 10:12 p.m. call, dispatched an 18-person rescue team, used an on-site crane to lift the worker from the tunnel, and transported the patient to a hospital in stable condition.
  • Tunnel boring has been temporarily paused at the Paradise Road site where crews are extending the network toward the airport pending an accident investigation.
  • Nevada OSHA confirmed it was notified of the incident and sent officials to the site to open an investigation.
  • Previous reporting documented dozens of injuries on Las Vegas tunnel projects and a brief monorail shutdown, after which the LVCVA placed a staffer to oversee safety at Boring Company sites.
  • The Las Vegas system has 3.5 miles in service with more than 3 million rides, the company holds initial approvals toward a proposed 68-mile network, is seeking additional permits, and recently tested self-driving Teslas with safety drivers; the company did not immediately comment.
