Overview

  • The white supremacist group The Base, founded in 2018 by former US special forces member Rinaldo Nazzaro, claimed the July 16 shooting of Colonel Ivan Voronich.
  • Voronich led the SBU’s elite Alpha unit and oversaw high-risk raids into Russia’s Kursk region in August 2024.
  • Ukraine’s Security Service says it tracked and killed two suspects identified as operatives of Russia’s FSB in connection with the colonel’s assassination.
  • On its Ukrainian Telegram channel The Base warned that the attack was “just the beginning” of its extremist campaign in Ukraine.
  • Rinaldo Nazzaro has denied any personal involvement in the Kyiv operation and said he does not know who carried it out.
