Thane Orders Weekly 24-Hour Water Shutdowns as City Confronts 50 MLD Shortfall

The plan reallocates water from major projects to drinking supply, enforces disconnections for illegal taps, introduces GPS tanker tracking, schedules fortnightly reviews.

Overview

  • The Thane Municipal Corporation said Monday it faces a daily shortfall of 50 million litres a day after receiving 590 MLD against a demand of 640 MLD.
  • To stretch stocks, TMC will impose a 10% cut every Wednesday with a 24-hour shutdown starting 9 am on October 28 and running weekly thereafter.
  • The civic body has ordered an immediate stop to municipal water for Metro and other large infrastructure projects so those works will use treated sewage water instead.
  • Ward-level enforcement squads will identify and disconnect illegal taps and register cases against plumbers, while valve operators will be monitored and transferred to curb local pilferage.
  • TMC will GPS-map its tankers, monitor private filling points, revive public wells and hold 15-day reviews through June 30, 2027, under a state directive in force until August 31, 2027.
