Overview
- MMRDA reported that as of September 2 the project had reached about 40% overall physical progress with 332 of 426 working piles finished, 277 of 426 piers built and 460 pier caps cast.
- I-girder erection is under way with 501 of 1,632 girders installed and 13 deck-slab spans completed, leaving substantial girder and decking work needed before lanes can open.
- A large share of the 13.45 km, six-lane corridor will sit on viaducts, including an 8.11 km elevated stretch and a 240‑metre creek bridge, to reduce direct disturbance to the mangrove belt.
- The project uses a single-pile, single-pier monopile foundation system on land, a construction method project authorities say is a first for an Indian greenfield road and that aims to simplify foundations and lower the footprint.
- Road users will see benefits only in stages because the Coastal Road’s traffic relief depends on finishing elevated spans and linking to nearby works such as the Gaimukh tunnel, a planned bridge and other Thane corridors before the corridor delivers full regional and freight connectivity.
