Thames Water Launches Automatic Bill Cuts for Low-Income Homes in 17 London Boroughs

Data-sharing with councils identifies eligible customers for half-price WaterHelp tariffs without an application.

Overview

  • Thames Water says around 33,000 households will be enrolled, saving more than £300 a year on average and over £10 million in total annually.
  • Eligibility is determined where water costs exceed 5% of net income using the Policy in Practice platform in partnership with participating boroughs.
  • Customers do not need to be in arrears to qualify, and households with existing arrears are being moved onto WaterHelp automatically.
  • The expansion follows pilots in Wandsworth and Richmond upon Thames, with Wandsworth reporting more than 1,000 homes receiving reduced bills.
  • The programme also flags customers for WaterSure and the Extra Support Scheme of up to £700 as lenders advance a £20.5 billion turnaround plan for Ofwat review.
