Overview

  • Weekday use of Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels declined by 5% to about 91,000 vehicles following the introduction of tolls in April.
  • Morning peak speeds on the A102 approach have jumped from 9mph to 30mph since the new crossing opened.
  • Approximately 13% of drivers are dodging tunnel fees by rerouting to the free Woolwich Ferry, where weekday traffic has risen 36% and weekends by 58%.
  • Traffic has increased on alternative routes, with a 10% uptick at the Rotherhithe Tunnel and a 6% eastbound and 4% westbound rise on the A13.
  • Zero-emission buses are making over 20,000 free daily trips through the tunnels until April 2026 under a scheme to boost public transport.
