Thalassery Court Hands Life Terms to Seven in 2008 CPI(M) Leader’s Murder

The judge ruled the killing was a premeditated political attack.

  • Additional District and Sessions Court Judge J. Vimal convicted seven RSSBJP activists for the 2008 killing of CPI(M) local secretary K. Latheesh in Thalassery, Kannur.
  • The court sentenced each to life imprisonment with concurrent cumulative terms totaling 35 years on four counts and imposed fines of ₹1.40 lakh each.
  • Those found guilty are P. Sumith (Kuttan), A. K. Prajeesh Babu (Praji), B. Nithin (Nithu), K. Sanal, Srijesh (Kuttan), Sajeesh (Jeeshu) and V. Jayesh.
  • Accused numbers nine to twelve were acquitted for lack of evidence, and the eighth accused died during the trial.
  • Prosecutors detailed a coordinated attack in which assailants hurled bombs and used swords and an axe to hack the 28-year-old CITU fishermen’s union leader to death, a case built through 30 witnesses, 90 documents and 27 material exhibits since the trial began in 2020.
