Thailand’s New PM Sets Rapid-Relief Plan, Seeks Border Referendum and January Dissolution

The minority administration faces a four-month deadline to dissolve parliament under a deal with the People’s Party.

Overview

  • In a Sept. 29 policy speech to parliament, Anutin Charnvirakul detailed immediate relief including help for individuals with debts up to 100,000 baht and liquidity lines up to 1 million baht for small businesses.
  • The government plans a 47 billion baht co-payment program that would subsidize up to 60% of select food and consumer goods for eligible Thai citizens.
  • Anutin said he will seek a national referendum on whether to revoke the ThailandCambodia border memorandum of understanding to avoid further conflict.
  • At least 48 people were killed and more than 260,000 displaced in July’s five-day clash with Cambodia before a Malaysia-brokered ceasefire.
  • The prime minister pledged to dissolve parliament by Jan. 31 under his four-month mandate, with growth forecast at 1.8%–2.3% this year as a strong baht, heavy household debt and U.S. tariffs weigh on the economy.
