Thailand's Cabinet Approves Marriage Equality Bill

If passed, the amendment would make Thailand the third Asian country to recognize same-sex marriage.

  • Thailand's Cabinet has approved a bill on marriage equality, which will be submitted to Parliament in December.
  • The amendment to the Civil and Commercial Code will change the terms 'men and women' and 'husband and wife' to 'individuals' and 'marriage partners', allowing same-sex couples to receive the same rights as heterosexual couples.
  • Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has prioritized the issue since taking office in August.
  • If the bill is passed by Parliament and endorsed by King Maha Vajiralongkorn, Thailand will become the third place in Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal, to allow same-sex marriage.
  • Despite having one of Asia's most open and visible LGBTQ+ communities, Thailand's laws and traditional institutions have been criticized for not reflecting changing social attitudes and discriminating against LGBTQ+ people and same-sex couples.
