Overview

  • Thailand returned two wounded Cambodian soldiers at a border checkpoint on August 1, but continues to detain 18 others on allegations of illegal entry.
  • The General Border Committee meeting will take place in Malaysia August 4–7 with defence ministers, commanders and defence attaches from ASEAN, the US and China.
  • Cambodia has insisted that all detained soldiers be released immediately and unconditionally under international humanitarian law.
  • UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk welcomed the truce and urged both sides to protect civilians and provide redress for those affected by the clashes.
  • The ceasefire was secured on July 28 through Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship and President Trump’s diplomatic pressure after a five-day conflict that killed at least 43 people and displaced more than 300,000.
