Overview

  • The Office of the Attorney General has indicted 23 individuals and firms over the collapse of the partly built 30-storey State Audit Office tower in Bangkok.
  • Among those charged are Italian-Thai Development president Premchai Karnasuta and China Railway Number 10 (Thailand) Ltd, a unit of China Railway Group.
  • Prosecutors allege the collapse stemmed from breaches of building codes, professional negligence and forged engineering documents.
  • The tower fell seconds after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck neighbouring Myanmar on March 28, killing at least 95 construction workers.
  • The case has been sent to criminal court for trial in the coming months, with convicted defendants facing up to 10 years in prison and 200,000 baht in fines.
