Overview
- From Nov 8, individuals can be fined up to 10,000 baht for drinking or being served alcohol during restricted times or in prohibited places.
- National prohibited hours are reported as 2pm to 5pm and midnight to 11am for sale or consumption outside permitted settings.
- Licensed entertainment venues, hotels, certified tourist establishments and some international airports are exempt from the restrictions.
- The amendments also tighten marketing rules by allowing only factual alcohol advertising and barring celebrities, influencers and public figures from commercial promotions.
- Restaurant leaders and an opposition MP warn of business disruption and tourist confusion, citing scenarios where a drink bought before a cutoff time results in a fine after the cutoff, while travel advisers urge visitors to follow the rules during the ongoing mourning period.
