Thailand and Cambodia Sign Immediate Ceasefire to Halt Border Clashes

A 72-hour verification under ASEAN oversight will determine the return of 18 detained Cambodian soldiers.

Overview

  • Effective at 12:00 noon local time on Dec 27, the truce was signed by Thai defence minister Natthaphon Narkphanit and Cambodia’s Tea Seiha after three days of border talks.
  • Terms include freezing troop deployments, stopping all attacks including against civilians, facilitating the return of displaced residents, and cooperating on demining.
  • An ASEAN observer team will monitor compliance alongside direct communication between the two countries’ defence ministries and armed forces.
  • Thailand agreed to repatriate 18 Cambodian soldiers captured in July if the ceasefire is fully maintained for 72 hours.
  • Weeks of fighting have killed more than 100 people and displaced over half a million, with Cambodia reporting Thai airstrikes earlier on Saturday as a Thai spokesman later said the ceasefire was holding.
