Thailand and Cambodia Sign Immediate Border Ceasefire With ASEAN Oversight

ASEAN monitors will verify compliance through expanded mechanisms designed to prevent renewed escalation.

Overview

  • The joint declaration takes effect at noon local time on December 27 following a General Border Committee session at the Prum–Ban Pak Kard crossing co-chaired by defense ministers Tea Seiha and Nattaphon Narkphanit.
  • The truce prohibits the use of all weapons, bans troop movements toward opposing positions, and blocks any increase of forces along the entire frontier.
  • Verification measures strengthen the ASEAN Observers’ mandate, establish bilateral border coordination units, keep direct Defense Ministry and military HQ lines open, and create a joint task force for demining with coordinated public communications to curb misinformation.
  • The ceasefire follows a Thai-confirmed F-16 strike in Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchey that destroyed homes and infrastructure, with no immediate reports of casualties from Phnom Penh.
  • Authorities report heavy humanitarian costs since December 7, including dozens of deaths and mass evacuations, as Thailand warns it could pursue large-scale operations if the truce is not honored.
