Thailand and Cambodia Enforce Border Ceasefire Under 72-Hour ASEAN Watch
ASEAN observers begin a 72-hour verification of the truce to set conditions for next humanitarian steps.
Overview
- The ceasefire took effect at 12:00 local time on Dec. 27 following bilateral talks, Thai Defence Minister Gen. Natthaphon Nakphanit announced.
- Troops along the line of contact were ordered to remain in place and halt all hostile or provocative actions, with no reinforcements or additional equipment sent to the border.
- ASEAN military observers, together with both sides, will supervise compliance for 72 hours to evaluate security on the ground.
- Evacuated civilians may return if areas are judged safe after the monitoring period, followed by Thailand’s transfer of captured Cambodian servicemembers.
- Both governments also reaffirmed work through border committees on demarcation and humanitarian demining, with a prior declaration providing for the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers if the truce holds.
