Thai Airstrikes Hit Near Poipet as U.S. and China Press Ceasefire Ahead of ASEAN Talks

More than half a million people have fled since the border clashes reignited this month.

Overview

  • Thailand acknowledged bombing targets on the outskirts of Poipet, saying an F-16 strike hit a rocket warehouse, while Cambodia accused Bangkok of dropping bombs inside the city and reported a second strike in Serei Sophaon.
  • Washington said Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged de-escalation in a call with Thailand’s foreign minister, and Beijing said Wang Yi spoke with both sides and sent a special envoy for shuttle diplomacy.
  • ASEAN will gather foreign ministers in Kuala Lumpur on Dec. 22, with Malaysia’s Anwar Ibrahim cautiously optimistic and both governments set for their first face-to-face since fighting resumed.
  • Hostilities continued on Friday with cross-border fire reported by Thailand’s defence ministry, and official casualty accounts remained sharply at odds.
  • The UN human rights chief condemned strikes near villages and cultural sites and urged an immediate halt to protect civilians, as advisories warned travelers to avoid a 50 km zone and border closures left thousands stranded in Poipet.
