TGA Flags 21 Sunscreens Using Shared Formula After Tests Show SPF as Low as 4

Most affected products are off the market following regulator concerns about PCR Corp's SPF testing.

Overview

  • The regulator published a list of 21 products from 17 companies that used a Wild Child Laboratories base formulation found unlikely to exceed SPF 21, with some items preliminarily testing at SPF 4.
  • Around 18 sunscreens have been recalled, cancelled or paused while reviews proceed, with only two on sale in Australia—Allganics Light Sunscreen SPF50+ and GlindaWand The Fountain of Youth Environmental Defence Cream SPF50+.
  • The TGA reported significant concerns about the reliability of SPF testing by UK-based Princeton Consumer Research Corp and said it has not received a response to its formal letter.
  • Wild Child Laboratories has ceased production and supply of the base formulation, stopped using PCR for testing, and commissioned confirmatory testing at other accredited labs; the TGA found no manufacturing faults at the facility.
  • The TGA is weighing regulatory action and advised consumers who purchased products on the list to consider using alternatives while companies retest and the investigation continues.
