Tezpur University Teachers Urge VC’s Ouster Over Alleged Financial, Administrative Lapses

The association has petitioned top state authorities for the vice chancellor’s removal over alleged financial and governance failures.

Overview

  • TUTA said it submitted a detailed memorandum to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, the university’s chancellor, as well as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seeking Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh’s removal.
  • The memorandum alleges questionable procurement and contract practices, repeated awards to the same vendors, pressure on faculty to certify work without proper documents, and poor‑quality HEFA‑funded construction including cracked, leaky hostels.
  • The association accuses the Finance Office of delayed disbursements and unprofessional conduct that it says hinder research and departmental work.
  • It further cites governance issues such as scrapping the Pro‑Vice Chancellor post, ad hoc appointments, arbitrary suspensions, vacancies in key roles, creation of unauthorised posts, and excessive perks for the VC.
  • A recent student confrontation over alleged remarks about singer Zubeen Garg has drawn a magisterial probe, the university PRO resigned last week alleging an autocratic leadership style, and the VC has not responded to requests for comment.
