Texas Waives Public College Application Fees This Week

Leaders say the temporary waiver lowers upfront costs to make applying to college easier for Texas residents.

Overview

  • The statewide program, which began Monday, Oct. 12, waives undergraduate application fees at public Texas colleges through Sunday, Oct. 18 for eligible Texas residents.
  • Eligibility covers first-time students, transfers, returning students and visiting undergraduates while graduate programs and private universities are not required to participate.
  • Applicants generally must submit through ApplyTexas to receive the automatic waiver, but some schools such as the University of Texas at Austin will honor other platforms like the Common Application for Texas residents.
  • ApplyTexas warned that fee prompts and payment pages may still appear during the week even though qualifying applications will be processed without charge and applicants should be prepared to submit transcripts and other documents to meet each school’s deadlines.
  • State officials point to the program’s inaugural run last year, when more than 260,000 applications were submitted, and say the waiver supports broader affordability efforts such as the undergraduate tuition freeze and plans for accelerated degree pathways.
