Overview

  • Texas becomes the first team ever to open the season ranked No. 1 in the coaches poll after earning 28 first-place votes and 1,606 points.
  • Ohio State follows at No. 2 with 20 first-place votes, setting up the inaugural preseason No. 1 versus No. 2 season opener at Ohio Stadium on Aug. 30.
  • Penn State (No. 3), Georgia (No. 4) and Notre Dame (No. 5) round out the top five, receiving 14, three and zero first-place votes respectively.
  • The SEC leads all conferences with nine teams in the preseason Top 25, followed by six Big Ten and five Big 12 entries, while Boise State stands alone for the Group of Five.
  • The poll is conducted by the American Football Coaches Association with a randomly selected panel of 67 head coaches and influences early College Football Playoff narratives.
