Texas Tech Bans Tortilla Toss at Football Games After Big 12 Crackdown

Starting Oct. 25, the school will enforce gate checks with ticket suspensions to head off Big 12 penalties.

Overview

  • Athletic director Kirby Hocutt announced the university will no longer encourage or permit tortilla throwing, reversing his earlier support of the tradition.
  • Big 12 enforcement now allows one warning followed by a 15-yard penalty and a $100,000 fine for continued object throwing, after Texas Tech was fined $25,000 for the Oct. 11 Kansas game.
  • Fans will be asked to discard tortillas at entry, ushers will collect any that get inside, and cameras will help identify violators for suspension of ticket privileges for the rest of the academic year across all sports.
  • The prohibition takes effect for Saturday’s home game against Oklahoma State at Jones AT&T Stadium.
  • Hocutt, the lone dissenting vote in the Big 12’s August policy decision, said the change is necessary to avoid competitive harm during a season in which the No. 14 Red Raiders are 6-1.
