Texas Sues Roblox, Accusing Platform of Misleading Parents on Child Safety

The filing adds to state actions challenging the site's controls against predators.

Overview

  • Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a civil lawsuit on Nov. 6 alleging Roblox deceived parents and repeatedly exposed minors to sexually explicit content, exploitation and grooming.
  • Roblox rejected the claims as misrepresentations, saying it employs industry-leading protections and shares the goal of keeping children safe online.
  • The company says it prohibits image and video sharing in chat, filters personal information, uses automated tools with thousands of moderators, and has introduced more than 145 safety measures this year.
  • Roblox also reports testing age estimation for chat features and offering government ID-based age verification, while emphasizing cooperation with law enforcement groups including the FBI and NCMEC.
  • The action follows similar suits by attorneys general in Kentucky and Louisiana, and comes as Roblox reports 151.5 million daily active users in Q3 with about 40% under age 13 and 83% outside the U.S. and Canada.
