Texas State Fires History Professor Over Viral Conference Video Deemed to Advocate Violence

University leaders said the clip of his socialism conference remarks promoted incitement.

Overview

  • President Kelly Damphousse terminated associate professor Thomas Alter after reviewing the recording and calling it serious professional and personal misconduct.
  • In the video, Alter said, “Without organization, how can anyone expect to overthrow the most bloodthirsty, profit-driven, mad organization in the history of the world — that of the U.S. government,” while urging creation of a revolutionary socialist party.
  • The Texas State University System chancellor, Brian McCall, backed the decision, saying the recordings advocated overthrow and were inconsistent with system values.
  • The circulated clip was edited and posted to X, while a fuller version on YouTube includes additional context, such as Alter saying the U.S. was not currently in a revolutionary situation and critiquing other groups’ tactics.
  • Alter’s faculty page was removed from the university site, and his firing followed a separate Texas A&M dismissal this week after classroom video controversy.
