Texas Names Members of Joint Panels to Investigate Hill Country Floods

The committees plan hearings to scrutinize flood causes, emergency response coordination, Camp Mystic’s actions.

Overview

  • Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dustin Burrows appointed ten lawmakers to joint House and Senate investigating committees formed after the July 4 disaster.
  • Rep. Morgan Meyer chairs the House panel with Rep. Joe Moody as vice chair, while Sen. Pete Flores leads the Senate panel with Sen. Charles Perry as vice chair.
  • Other appointees include Reps. Drew Darby, Paul Dyson and Erin Gámez, plus Sens. Bryan Hughes, Lois Kolkhorst and José Menéndez.
  • Patrick said Camp Mystic has not publicly detailed the events of that morning and will be invited to testify, noting he was shocked the camp began signing up new campers.
  • Lawmakers will review contributing factors and response failures after floods that killed more than 130 people, including 27 campers and counselors, building on reforms Gov. Greg Abbott signed to tighten camp licensing, cabin siting and emergency preparedness requirements.
