Texas measles outbreak slows but spreads to new counties as US cases top 1,000

Public health officials have broadened vaccination clinics from West Texas to Colorado communities to contain new exposures.

Overview

  • Texas has confirmed 729 measles cases since late January, with a net gain of one case this week and the first infection recorded in Brewster County.
  • The outbreak has hospitalized 94 people and caused two fatalities among unvaccinated school-aged children in West Texas.
  • Nearly 95% of Texas infections are in unvaccinated individuals, while only 19 fully vaccinated people have contracted measles.
  • Collin County and Colorado health departments have issued public alerts after exposures at McKinney fitness centers, restaurants and at Children’s Hospital Colorado.
  • Nationwide, more than 1,000 measles cases have emerged in at least 32 states in 2025, prompting expanded MMR vaccination efforts.
