Overview

• On July 14, a maintenance worker at a Kingsville Walmart discovered a newborn wrapped in a restroom trash bag and employees administered CPR until paramedics arrived.
• Surveillance footage showed the teenager entering the restroom for about 40 minutes before exiting and leaving the store roughly 30 minutes before the infant was found.
• Deputies with the Kleberg County Sheriff’s Office tracked the teen’s vehicle in the parking lot and took her to a nearby hospital for treatment.
• Jerry Lee Martinez, 45, was booked without bond on charges including criminally negligent child endangerment, evidence tampering and witness tampering.
• Officials highlighted Texas Safe Haven laws and urged anyone in crisis to contact emergency services immediately to ensure newborns and mothers receive proper medical care.
