Overview
- Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dustin Burrows named five senators and five representatives to jointly investigate the July 4 flooding, with Sen. Pete Flores and Rep. Morgan Meyer serving as chairs and Sen. Charles Perry and Rep. Joe Moody as vice chairs.
- The committees will examine the facts and circumstances of the disaster, evaluate disaster preparedness and response, review interagency coordination, and scrutinize actions taken at youth camps.
- Patrick said Camp Mystic will be invited to testify, and the camp said it looks forward to working with the panels to clarify what happened.
- The floods killed at least 136 people statewide, including 27 campers and counselors at Camp Mystic, and one child, 8-year-old Cile Steward, remains missing.
- No hearings have been scheduled, coming after new laws were signed requiring outdoor warning sirens, emergency alert systems, staff training, written emergency plans, and placing camp cabins outside flood-prone areas, as Camp Mystic plans a limited reopening at its uphill Cypress Lake site in 2026.
