Texas GOP Senate Candidate Condemned After Calling Hanuman Statue a 'False God'

Hindu advocacy leaders are pressing the Texas GOP for discipline as the campaign frames the remarks as protected speech.

Overview

  • Alexander Duncan posted a video of Sugar Land’s 90-foot Hanuman monument and wrote, “Why are we allowing a false statue of a false Hindu God to be here in Texas? We are a CHRISTIAN nation.”
  • In follow-up posts, he cited Exodus 20:3–4 and Romans 1:25 to denounce idol worship, reiterating his view that the statue is an idol.
  • The Hindu American Foundation called the comments anti-Hindu and inflammatory and filed a formal complaint urging the Texas Republican Party to take disciplinary action.
  • Campaign manager Derek Ayala defended the posts as personal religious beliefs protected by free speech and said Duncan has not advocated policies limiting Hindu practice.
  • The Texas GOP has not announced any action, while the statue remains at Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple; online reaction ranged from demolition calls to reminders of constitutional religious freedom.
