Texas Floods Kill Three as High Water Moves Downstream

Officials warn rising flows toward Lake Corpus Christi will delay damage surveys and extend the emergency into early August.

Overview

  • A third flood-related death was confirmed by Gov. Greg Abbott on July 24 after a driver was swept away in Val Verde County on July 20.
  • State teams have carried out more than 500 rescues and deployed over 2,700 personnel with about 1,400 vehicles, 220 boats and 20 aircraft to support search, rescue and recovery.
  • The flooding began with extreme rain in the Hill Country around July 12 that caused fast river surges and record crests before the Nueces River pushed water into South Texas.
  • Preliminary counts show more than 700 homes damaged statewide, including at least 48 in Cotulla, and many roads and bridges have been washed out so evaluators cannot yet reach flooded neighborhoods.
  • Officials say local door-to-door warnings in La Salle County reduced loss of life and that continued rises downstream, especially near Lake Corpus Christi, could prolong access problems and raise cleanup costs into early August.
