Texas Executes David Renteria for 2001 Murder of 5-Year-Old Girl

Renteria, who claimed a gang forced him to commit the crime, apologized and forgave his executioners in his final statement.

David Renteria, 53, was executed in Texas on Thursday for the 2001 murder of 5-year-old Alexandra Flores.
Renteria abducted Flores from a Walmart store in El Paso, strangled her to death, and then set her body on fire.
Renteria had long claimed that members of the Barrio Azteca gang forced him to commit the crime, but authorities said evidence showed he acted alone.
Before his execution, Renteria issued a final statement apologizing for his actions and forgiving those who called for his death.
Renteria's execution marks the eighth in Texas this year and one of two carried out in the U.S. on Thursday.
