Texas Cruise Passenger Identified in Fatal Fall on Juneau’s Mount Roberts

Officials cite a wrong turn near the tram in foggy, rainy darkness as key factors.

Overview

  • Alaska State Troopers identified the victim as 36-year-old Britian Pool of Texas, who died after sliding down a steep slope off the Mount Roberts trail on Sept. 16.
  • Troopers were alerted around 8 p.m., and Juneau Mountain Rescue extracted a second hiker with minor injuries.
  • Drones located Pool farther down the mountainside, and volunteers recovered his body for transport to the State Medical Examiner after next-of-kin notification.
  • Both men were cruise visitors who inadvertently followed a non-trail path near the tram during hazardous conditions of darkness, dense fog, light rain, and slick ground.
  • SEADOGS and Capital City Fire/Rescue supported the operation, authorities have not named the cruise ship, and a comparable hiker death in the area was reported in July.
