Texas Braces for Sharp Cold Front Tonight as Temperatures Plunge From Near-Record Heat

The mainly dry surge will bring strong northerly winds that heighten fire danger.

Overview

  • Near-record warmth Saturday — including upper 80s to near 90 in Houston and upper 80s in San Antonio — gives way to a winterlike chill beginning Saturday evening.
  • The front reaches the Hill Country around 9 p.m., moves into San Antonio by 11 p.m.–midnight, crosses North Texas this evening, and pushes through Houston early Sunday with little or no rain.
  • Gusty northerly winds Sunday will be widespread at 20–30 mph with peak gusts up to 40–45 mph in South-Central Texas, driving cold wind chills and elevating wildfire risk.
  • By Monday morning, lows fall into the 30s around San Antonio and Houston, with freezing or subfreezing readings in the Hill Country and near-freezing temperatures in parts of the Dallas–Fort Worth area.
  • Forecasters expect the cold spell to be brief, with sunshine Monday and a rapid warmup back to the 70s Tuesday and widespread 80s by midweek.
