Texans Expect C.J. Gardner-Johnson to Play Week 1 After Knee Scare

The veteran safety is slated to return from an Aug. 7 knee scare after tests ruled out ACL damage.

Overview

  • Coach DeMeco Ryans said Monday he expects Gardner-Johnson to be ready for the opener against the Rams.
  • He is expected to practice this week and start in the secondary alongside safety Calen Bullock.
  • Gardner-Johnson injured his right knee during an Aug. 7 scrimmage at the Greenbrier and left on a medical cart.
  • Subsequent testing ruled out a torn ACL, and reporting indicated a realistic chance to play in the season opener.
  • Houston acquired him in March in a trade for former first-rounder Kenyon Green, and he is coming off a season with six interceptions, a pick-six, 12 pass breakups and 35 solo tackles.
