Tessa Thompson Praises Playful Marvel Partners at BFI Talk as Hedda Locks U.S. Dates

She says Marvel’s kid-like imagination reshaped her approach to acting.

Overview

  • At a BFI London Film Festival screen talk, Thompson affectionately called Chris Hemsworth “a baby with muscles” and likened Taika Waititi to “an infant with a bank account.”
  • Hedda premiered at the festival and will open in select U.S. theaters on Oct. 22 before streaming on Amazon Prime Video starting Oct. 29, according to Entertainment Weekly.
  • Thompson said the Marvel process demanded pure imagination that “freed” her creatively and validated her decision to seek out the role.
  • She credited director Nia DaCosta for creating the opportunity to lead Hedda and noted that few women of color have historically played the character; the film is produced through her company Viva Maude.
  • Reflecting on Creed, she recalled Ryan Coogler’s indie-rooted approach and extensive improvisation with Michael B. Jordan that informed the final script.
