Overview

  • Tesla will initially invite only select riders and cautions that the June 22 start date could shift if safety standards are not met.
  • About 10 to 20 unmodified Model Y SUVs will run an unsupervised version of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software during the pilot phase.
  • Vehicles will be confined to designated zones in Austin and overseen remotely by company staff to address potential issues in real time.
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating Tesla’s FSD system after past incidents and experts have raised concerns about camera-only sensing.
  • If the Austin pilot succeeds, Tesla plans rapid expansion of its robotaxi network to cities such as Los Angeles, San Antonio and San Francisco.
