Tesla Robotaxi Secures Texas Permit for Statewide Autonomous Ride-Hailing

The license lets Tesla challenge Uber and Lyft statewide without onboard safety drivers under Texas’s updated autonomous-vehicle regulations.

Overview

  • On August 7, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation granted Tesla Robotaxi LLC a Transportation Network Company license valid through August 6, 2026, enabling fully driverless ride-hailing across the state.
  • Since late June, Tesla has expanded its invitation-only Austin pilot by widening its geofenced area and replacing a flat fare with distance-based dynamic pricing.
  • Federal regulators at the U.S. Department of Transportation and NHTSA requested demonstration drives of Tesla’s Austin robotaxi fleet and have reviewed the company’s confidential operational data.
  • Tesla is testing next-generation Full Self-Driving software in right-hand-drive markets such as the U.K. and New Zealand with the aim of reducing driver attention requirements for complex scenarios.
  • With its new TNC permit, Tesla can directly compete with Uber and Lyft in Texas and set the stage for broader robotaxi deployments pending further regulatory approvals.
